Totally self - contained herd, fed from within our own farms will raise the highest quality sustainable food

USE OF PROVEN PASTURE MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES TO ENSURE HIGH LEVELS OF PASTURE HARVESTED

DHL strictly adheres to the Spring Rotation Planner (SRP), grazing round lengths and achieving end of season dry off pasture cover targets. This ensures that the maximum amount of high quality pasture is grown and harvested on each farm. It also ensures animals are fed appropriately throughout the season to achieve targeted body condition.

100% pasture diet and home grown fodder crops

Since 2019 DHL has been using 100% pasture and home grown fodder crops. The removal of PKE from the farm system has been replaced with grass silage. Imported feed on DHL dairy farms ranges from 20-50 kg DM/cow compared to the NZ herd average of 1,200 kg DM/cow. The use of 100% pasture on our dairy farms allows DHL to deliver the highest quality milk to Fonterra and Westland Milk.

Use of CropX moisture sensors to ensure efficient water use

Soil sensors across all DHL properties, under each irrigator measure soil temperature, soil moisture and electrical conductivity. The technology uses historical data to constantly adjust thresholds for starting and stopping irrigation. This results in the use of less water and electricity for irrigation. It also means less nitrogen is leached from the soil.
